Inks

Sheet-fed litho inks contain heavy metals such as barium,
copper and zinc. These are found in certain pigments, particularly
metallic colours. They can have negative environmental impacts,
and in studies have been linked to an increased risk of printers
developing bladder cancer.
The majority of printers still use petroleum-based inks,
and these are using up precious non-renewable resources.
Inks, like IPA, contain VOCs. The levels of VOC’s are
much lower than they were a few years ago, and are lower still
in vegetable based inks, but they are there and have been associated
with breathing difficulties, liver and kidney damage.
At Digital Publishing International the only ink we use is
the ink in our pens. It is company policy not to print any
email or documents unless it is unavoidable. Digital print
requires no ink and yet produces colourful and vibrant publications.
